A Colorful Way to Celebrate Love

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to get creative with kids! Instead of traditional cards, why not make a one-of-a-kind acrylic pour heart art piece? This simple and mesmerizing technique allows kids to explore color mixing, fluid art, and the joy of unpredictability—all while creating a unique keepsake to cherish or gift to someone special.

Materials Needed

✔️ Small wooden heart cutouts (or mini canvases). Michael’s has 4″ hearts available ONLINE
✔️ Acrylic paints (in Valentine’s colors like red, pink, white, gold, and purple)
✔️ Pouring medium (to make the paint flow smoothly). I like using Floetrol available on Amazon
✔️ Plastic cups (for mixing and pouring)
✔️ Stir sticks
✔️ Gloves & a drop cloth (to keep the mess under control)
✔️ Paper towels

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare Your Work Area

Acrylic pouring can get messy! Lay down a drop cloth or newspaper to protect your surface. Have kids wear old clothes or an apron.

2. Mix Your Paints

In separate cups, mix each acrylic paint color with an equal amount of pouring medium (a 1:1 ratio works well). Stir thoroughly until the paint flows smoothly but isn’t too watery.

3. Choose Your Pouring Technique

Here are a few fun techniques to try:

🎨 Dirty Pour: Layer different colors in one cup, then flip or pour onto the wood heart for a swirling effect.
🎨 Swipe: Pour colors side by side and use a palette knife or card to swipe across for a feathered look.
🎨 Puddle Pour: Pour small puddles of different colors and tilt the heart to let them blend naturally.

4. Pour the Paint!

Let kids tilt and move their wooden hearts to watch the colors flow and mix in magical ways. No two pieces will ever look the same!

5. Let It Dry

Place the hearts on an elevated surface (like cups) so they don’t stick to your work area. Let them dry for at least 48 hours.
